Objective
Xiangqi is played on the intersections of a 9×10 grid, split by a river. Each side commands 16 pieces. Checkmate the enemy general — trap it with no safe move — to win. Having no legal move at all (without being in check) also loses.
The Board
Pieces sit on the intersections, not inside the squares. Each side has a 3×3 palace — the General and Advisors may never leave it. The river blocks Elephants and changes how Soldiers move.
How Each Piece Moves
Moves one point orthogonally, staying inside the palace. Two generals may never face each other with nothing between them ("flying general").
Moves one point diagonally, staying inside the palace — only 5 points total.
Moves exactly two points diagonally, never crossing the river. Blocked if the middle point is occupied.
Moves like a knight — one point orthogonally then one diagonally. Blocked if the adjacent point is occupied.
Moves any distance horizontally or vertically, like a rook.
Moves like a Chariot when not capturing. To capture, it must jump over exactly one piece and land on an enemy beyond it.
Moves one point forward only, until it crosses the river, after which it can also move sideways. Never moves backward.
Tips for Beginners
• Develop your Horses and Chariots early — they're your most powerful pieces.
• Keep your General guarded by its Advisors and Elephants.
• Watch out for Cannons — they threaten along any line with exactly one piece in front.
• A Soldier past the river is worth more — it gains sideways movement.
